Sandfish (Holothuria scabra) larval rearing system, Mauritius
A tropical hatchery system for sandfish larval rearing, with staged filtration to 1 micron and UV sterilisation, built to strengthen regional capacity.
LoTech Aquaculture partnered with the University of the Sunshine Coast to design and build a dedicated sandfish (Holothuria scabra) larval rearing system for the Albion Fisheries Research Centre in Mauritius. The project formed part of a broader initiative to strengthen sustainable sandfish aquaculture and build regional capacity in tropical hatchery systems.
Commissioned in January 2026, the system includes eight larval tanks with staged mechanical filtration down to 1 micron and UV sterilisation. The design provides biosecure, high-quality seawater to support the early life stages of sandfish and reduce disease risk from incoming water.
The result is a stable, controlled environment for larval rearing, and a facility the centre can operate and maintain locally.
